The Elite, the sequel to Kiera Cass’ 2012 debut The Selection, hits shelves today. And fans of the series—myself included—couldn’t be happier. The trilogy follows 17-year-old America Singer as she enters the Selection, a lottery in which girls from all castes are chosen to compete for a chance to marry Prince Maxon. And while America finds herself unexpectedly falling for the prince, she can’t forget the boy she left behind, Aspen. In honor of The Elite‘s release, Cass answered some of our burning questions about the series. (Unfortunately, the author remained tight-lipped about the title for book 3, but she did confirm that she would reveal the name in conjunction with HarperTeen and Ustream later today.) Check it out after the jump, and get caught up on the series before The CW launches its TV adaptation.

What can you tease about The Elite?
I’ve been giving out some teases with HarperTeen, like America and Maxon spend the night together. And that we find out Marley’s secret and that has really bad consequences. I think that’s the biggest thing for me is Marley’s choices and Marley’s secret. That was hard to write. Right now I’m in the process of reading the third book out loud. When I read about Marley out loud, I just weep because I love her so much.

Have you known from the beginning who America would end up with?
When I sat down and wrote it out the first time, I did. I knew who she was supposed to be with. And as I got to the end of the first book, I realized I didn’t know America as well as I thought I did—a lot of things about her were different. So when I went back and rewrote it I realized she would pick someone different. So yes and no. Because the person that she ends up with changes. It is exactly who she would have picked, I just wasn’t paying attention.

Set 300 years in the future, the drama is an epic romance centering on a young working-class woman named America Singer (Israeli actress Yael Grobglas) chosen by lottery to participate in a competition with 25 other women for the Royal Prince Maxon’s (newcomer Michael Malarkey) hand to become the nation’s next queen. Balancing her loyalty to family, true love and the kingdom, she must attempt to remain true to herself as she navigates the cutthroat competition and palace intrigue, all while a budding rebellion threatens to topple the crown. It’s based on the book by Kiera Cass.

Head — who played Rupert Giles, the lovable brains of the Scooby gang on the CW predecessor WB Network’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer — will play King Clarkson, the patriarch of the royal family that rules the nation. He replaces Martin Donovan, who played the role in the previous incarnation of the pilot. Clarkson is described as a seasoned leader and politico who warns his son, Maxon, that he’ll have to give up any idea of romantic love and that his choice should be based on making a powerful political alliance.

Because of a theater commitment in her native country, I hear Grobglas, who is of French-Austrian decent, only had two weeks to audition in Los Angeles before returning home. They resulted in her booking America Singer. Set 300 years in the future, The Selection is an epic romance centering on America Singer (Grobglas), a working class young woman chosen by lottery to participate in a competition with 25 other women for the Royal Prince’s hand to become the nation’s next queen. Warner Bros. TV is producing the pilot, written by Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain based on Kiera Cass’ book. Aimee Teegarden, who played America in The Selection last year, is the lead of another CW pilot this year, Oxygen. Two other Selection cast members from last year, Sean Patrick Thomas and Peta Sergeant, are reprising their roles. While an unknown in the U.S., Grobglas has played the lead of a series before – she toplined the Israeli series Tanuhi (Give It A Rest). She is with Thruline and attorney Jamie Feldman.
